ELK RIVER, Minn. (BUSINESS WIRE) Great River Energy, a generation and transmission cooperative headquartered in Elk River, was recently honored with three awards from EPRI. Great River Energy was awarded the 2001 Technology Achievement Award by EPRI, and Coal Creek Station engineering leader, Charlie Bullinger, was awarded an Individual Achievement Award. EPRI also presented a Technology Transfer Award to Mark Strohfus, Great River Energy environmental scientist. The awards focus on increasing the efficient use of fuel for electric generation while reducing the impact on the environment.
Great River Energy Board Chair Henry Hanson accepted the 2001 Technology Achievement Award during the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association’s (NRECA) annual meeting in Dallas, Texas.
EPRI’s Technology Achievement Awards honor electric cooperatives that have demonstrated leadership in the development, technology transfer, application and use of EPRI products and services. Technology Transfer Awards recognize effective application of EPRI products to benefit an organization and its customers.
In presenting the awards, Hank Courtright, EPRI’s vice president of power generation and distributed resources, praised Great River Energy’s pursuit of opportunities to enhance the value of lignite as a fuel in electric power plants by increasing performance and reducing emissions. “Your efforts are acknowledged with appreciation across the industry’s power generation constituency,” he said. Great River Energy’s work to demonstrate enhancement of the value of lignite fuel by drying can extend to other high moisture fuels such as subbituminous coals.
In addition to his work on lignite fuel drying, Bullinger was honored for his work championing technology applications to address sulfur dioxide (SO2) emission control.
Strohfus was recognized for playing a key role in furthering the development of mercury control technologies for the power industry. Great River Energy’s Stanton Station and Coal Creek Station were host sites for EPRI tests of various mercury control options. Strohfus helped move the technology forward by providing substantial technical insights on the characteristics of plant designs and operations.
