Green Mountain Energy Co. to construct two commercial scale solar arrays in Texas

AUSTIN, Texas, Oct. 16, 2001 – Green Mountain Energy Company announced today that it plans to develop two commercial scale solar arrays in Texas totaling 100kW in size.

The company also launched the Big Texas Sun Clubà¢â€ž-, an easy way for Green Mountain Energy Company residential electric customers to support solar energy. Customers can join the Big Texas Sun Clubà¢â€ž- to help construct, develop and maintain new solar facilities in Texas as well as promote ongoing statewide education about solar energy.

“The launch of this new product and the development of these new solar facilities is a result of the tremendous customer demand we have experienced in the Texas market,” said Gillan Taddune, vice president and general manager of the Texas region for Green Mountain Energy Company. “We have large numbers of customers who have signed up for our 100% pollution free wind product who also are looking for ways to support solar energy in Texas – the Big Texas Sun Clubà¢â€ž- is the answer.”

The solar facilities are planned for Dallas and Houston and are part of Green Mountain Energy Company’s ongoing commitment to bring pollution free energy and new renewable facilities to Texans. Sites for the new solar facilities are expected to be announced in the coming months. Once completed, the arrays will prevent a total of 130 tons of CO2 from entering the air each year. This is equivalent to not driving roundtrip from Dallas to Houston over 600 times.

“By placing solar electric generation from photovoltaics in Dallas and Houston, Green Mountain Energy Company is providing clean energy where it is needed most. The more electricity we can produce in this renewable manner, the cleaner our air will be all over the State,” said Kathryn Houser, executive director of the Texas Solar Energy Society. “These projects serve to set a highly visible example that businesses, municipalities and individuals can emulate.”

Membership in the Big Texas Sun Clubà¢â€ž- costs $5.00 a month and is open to all Green Mountain Energy Company electricity customers. In addition to contributing to the development of solar facilities, members will receive a free beach towel, access to an online newsletter, a priority customer care number, and a tree planted in their name.

Customers can sign up for Green Mountain Energy(SM) electric service and the Big Texas Sun Clubà¢â€ž- by visiting or calling 1-866-GREEN TX.
