H. Peter Burg named chairman and CEO of FirstEnergy

March 21, 2002 — FirstEnergy Corp. announced that its Board of Directors named H. Peter Burg, 55, chairman and chief executive officer of FirstEnergy, effective at the company’s Annual Meeting of Shareholders on May 21.

Burg currently serves as FirstEnergy’s vice chairman and chief executive officer. He will succeed Fred D. Hafer, FirstEnergy’s current chairman, who announced last week his decision not to seek re-election to the Board, and to retire from the company in May.

A native of Akron, Ohio, Burg began his career with Ohio Edison in 1968. Following a series of promotions, he was elected treasurer in 1974, vice president in 1985, senior vice president and chief financial officer in 1989, and served as interim president of Ohio Edison subsidiary Pennsylvania Power Company from August 1994 through May 1995.

He was elected president of Ohio Edison in 1996, president and chief executive officer of FirstEnergy in April 1999, and chairman and chief executive officer in January 2000. Burg was elected to his current position in November 2001.
