Half-Million Meters are Now Read Via CellNet Network

CellNet Data Systems Inc. recently announced that it has reached the half-million mark with on-line utility meters being read on a real-time basis as often as every five minutes over its wireless data communications network. The company is currently engaged in the large-scale commercial deployment of its on-line metering services at a number of major utilities, including Kansas City Power and Light, Union Electric Co. and Northern States Power Co., with other network installations under way at Puget Sound Energy Inc. and Pacific Gas and Electric Co.

“The half-million mark we have now reached is a major benchmark in the deployment of the 2.4 million meters we currently have contracts to build and in our efforts to bring the benefits of our network meter reading system to electric, gas and water utilities and their millions of commercial and industrial and residential customers around the world,” said John “Mick” Seidl, CellNet`s president and CEO.

CellNet said it has the relationships in place today to offer services for all metering types–commercial and industrial gas and electric meters, and residential gas and electric meters. Its networks can also be used for simultaneous monitoring of vending machines, home security systems and control of electric distribution systems, including line switches and capacitor bank controllers. CellNet`s network collects timely sales and usage data and delivers information to utilities. The network can also be used for other commercial wireless data applications such as home security and remote status monitoring of vending machines and office equipment. For example, a pilot program using CellNet`s network for remote monitoring of vending machines is currently in place in Kansas City.

The company is working with several key partners, including Honeywell, ConnexT, Hewlett-Packard, Ameritech, ITI and Real Time Data to develop a broad range of value-added services from outage detection to energy management systems, all of which utilize CellNet`s wireless data communications technology.
