Husky Injection Molding Systems goes green with OPG

BOLTON, ON, Dec. 4, 2002 — Ontario Power Generation (OPG), a generator and seller of electricity, has announced that Husky Injection Molding Systems, a major global supplier of equipment and services to the plastics injection molding industry, will help eliminate the production of 890 tonnes of greenhouse gases and 4.7 tonnes of acid gas next year, thanks to its decision to purchase OPG Evergreenà¢â€ž- Energy Green Power.

Over the next year, Husky will buy green power — electricity produced from renewable sources such as wind, low-impact hydroelectric, biomass and solar — from OPG for use in its Bolton facility. All OPG environmentally friendly products are supplied by facilities that have been EcoLogoà¢â€ž- certified or equivalent under the federal government’s Environmental Choice Program.

“At Husky, we believe it makes good business sense to integrate sound environmental, social and economic considerations into all our decisions and practices,” says Robert Schad, Husky’s President and Chief Executive Officer. “To this end, purchasing electricity from renewable sources is a concrete step we can take today to foster the growth of green power projects in Ontario.”

In the past decade, Husky has become a standard bearer for ways to minimize the impacts of manufacturing on the natural environment. In 2001, its net CO(2) emissions from Canadian operations were 15 per cent less than in 1990. This figure is already well below the 2010 target set by the Kyoto Accord for Canadian companies to reduce emissions by six per cent from 1990 levels. And what makes Husky’s reduction even more remarkable is that the company’s Canadian operations have more than tripled in size in the past 12 years.

“We are currently looking at a variety of options to further reduce our greenhouse gas emissions” Schad says. “We already have in place an aggressive recycling program, energy efficiency in buildings and operations and increased video conferencing instead of air travel. Purchasing OPG Green Power is another way we can demonstrate our commitment to the environment.”

Pete Sprukulis, Vice President, Marketing at Ontario Power Generation, says that the decision by Husky to incorporate Green Power into its energy plans is an example that others may like to follow.

“Being an industry leader also means working closely with the community on protecting the environment,” Sprukulis said. “A growing number of companies understand that purchasing OPG Evergreenà¢â€ž- Energy Green Power can provide a visible demonstration of environmental commitment and contributes to the further development of the renewable energy sector.”

Recently, Corporate Knights Inc., a Toronto-based magazine and web site specializing in corporate ethics, recognized Husky as the most environmentally responsible company in Canada.

OPG Green Power is drawn from a renewable energy pool that is expected to grow in line with market demand. OPG Green Power is generated exclusively at facilities that are EcoLogoà¢â€ž- certified or the equivalent, and that exceed the rigorous requirements outlined by federal legislation. All OPG injections of Green Power into the Ontario grid on behalf of customers are tracked, verified, and audited, if necessary, by an independent third party. OPG is selling environmentally friendly electricity directly to large industrial and commercial organizations and to energy resellers. It does not supply the residential market directly.
