Hydro-Quebec Forms New Transmission Unit

Hydro-Quebec, one of North America`s leading energy companies, announced recently it has formed a new division to handle the operations of its transmission network in order to ensure non-discriminatory access to its transmission services.

The new division, which officially began operation May 1, 1997, was formed in response to the deregulation of the U.S. electricity wholesale market. It will operate separately from the rest of Hydro-Quebec under strict guidelines to guarantee confidentiality of customer information.

“We have fulfilled our objectives and met our commitment by opening our transmission network to U.S. wholesalers and unbundling the transmission and generation functions of our power grid,” said Jacques Regis, CEO. “We are now ready to do business with power generators–our customers–on both sides of the border.”
