Industry expert John Smith joins Datamatic

PLANO, Texas, Jan. 19, 2004 — Datamatic has expanded its Energy Systems team with the addition of John Smith as Vice President of Operations and Technology.

Datamatic has been aggressively expanding its energy and water divisions to meet the growing demand for its automated meter reading products. Datamatic has been a leading supplier of enterprise meter reading solutions for gas, water and electric utilities worldwide since 1977.

Smith began working with the Datamatic Energy Systems group in December 2003. As Vice President of Operations and Technology, he is responsible for the product technical roadmap, business development and product marketing.

“John Smith has been instrumental in shaping utility data collection and analysis worldwide,” said Scott Durham, Vice President of Sales for the Energy Division. “He’s considered one of the leaders in the development of current industry standard multi-vendor platforms that read commercial and industrial electric meters. His system’s expertise will help Datamatic create and release new products that will revolutionize the industry. We expect to introduce the first new product during the DistribuTECH Automation and Technology Conference in Orlando this month.”

Before joining Datamatic, Smith was Vice President of Itron’s Energy Information Systems Product Group. He joined Itron as a result of the company’s merger with Utility Translation Systems, where he was a founding partner. While at UTS, he held the position of Director of Product Development and Chief Technical Officer. There, he oversaw the creation of C&I data collection, complex billing, web-based presentation and analysis and interval data warehousing systems. Before joining UTS, Smith worked for eleven years at Westinghouse Electric Corporation as Manager of Product Software.

“The market has evolved and is ready for the next generation of data collection and analysis tools,” stated Smith. “I’m excited to be part of a team that is focused on leading this industry. Datamatic is a pioneer in AMR technology that, just like the company I co-founded, has an entrepreneurial spirit that drives its success. The course Datamatic has charted and its goals are a great fit for me.”

The extensive expansion program Datamatic has been actively implementing resulted in the accumulation of additional expertise in the Energy Systems division. Datamatic recently added Shawn Fields, Director of Market Development and Dan Hollow, Western Region Sales Manager to their Energy Division. The three, which were teamed together at UTS and Itron, are well known for developing and bringing leading-edge new products to the market.

“These three individuals helped UTS become a worldwide technology leader in meter reading systems for gas and electric utilities, as well as energy measurement and management systems for large commercial and industrial customers,” noted Durham. “They captured more than 70 percent market share of the major electric utilities. We look forward to that same level of success with the next generation products Datamatic will introduce to the market. Adding John, Shawn and Dan to the team is a key step forward in our strategic plan. Datamatic is committed to being a complete, triple utility solution provider.”
