International News: Nicaraguan Utility Awards EMS Contract

Empresa Nacional de Transmisiàƒ³n de Energàƒa Elàƒ©ctrica (ENTRESA) of Nicaragua has signed a contract for a new energy management system with the Energy Management & Information Systems Division of Siemens Power Transmission & Distribution Inc.

Siemens will provide its SINAUT Spectrum Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system with Intercontrol Center Protocol (ICCP), advanced power and network applications and an Operator Training Simulator for the National Load Dispatch Center (CNDC).

The CNDC’s objective is to schedule and operate the Nicaraguan National Electrical Interconnected System, which includes interconnections with other countries in Central America, to achieve economic benefits. ENTRESA expects the new system to allow the company to adhere to the quality and reliability factors necessary to administer the National Electrical Wholesale Market according to the procedures and regulations of the Nicaraguan National Energy Institute.

ENTRESA is part of the Empresa Nicaragàƒ¼ense de Electricidad (ENEL). In 1999, due to industry deregulation, ENEL was divided into four generation companies and two distribution companies with the intent to privatize. ENTRESA, the transmission company, remains government-owned.
