Norwood, Mass., April 29, 2002 — Analog Devices Inc., a maker of high-performance semiconductors for signal processing applications, announced that Invensys Metering Systems, a maker of power control and energy products for industrial and residential applications, has based its new digital electricity meter-the iConà¢â€ž- Meter-on ADI’s energy measurement IC.
The ADE7759 provides Invensys with a solid energy measurement technology that optimizes the iCon Meter’s capabilities to include “smart” functions in demand by utilities, including integrated electric/gas/water meter reading and remote data collection. Offering many benefits over electromechanical meters, the iCon Meter boasts easy connectivity to facilitate automatic meter reading and access to networked utility data.
Additional attractive features include end-point device monitoring, network connectivity, and Internet access to energy consumption data. Through its collaboration with Analog Devices, Invensys-already a market leader in water and gas metering-is well positioned to be a major solutions provider in electricity metering.
“As electricity metering continues to evolve and offers new data management capabilities to businesses and consumers, the meter manufacturers who quickly leverage new sensor and data converter technologies will become the leaders in this rapidly growing field,” said Pat O’Doherty, Product Line Director for Precision Converters, Analog Devices Inc. “Invensys has established itself as a true innovator with the new iCon Meter, which uses ADI’s latest metering data converter technology in combination with the novel contact-less current sensor from Invensys. ADI’s worldwide market and performance leadership in metering IC’s continues to be reinforced by providing the most accurate, most reliable and cost competitive metering solutions to our customers.”
“The Analog Devices’ data conversion technology is an essential component of the iCon Meter, which is the link to the Invensys Gateway Communications system (IGS),” said Arlin Rummel, iCon System Program Director, Invensys Metering Systems. “This new IGS end-to-end energy measurement system for gas, water and electricity is a platform for advanced data services that will enable utility companies to be more competitive and will help redefine the future of energy management.”
The movement toward digital meters
The increasing importance of more accurate energy measurement data, and real-time access to that data, is accelerating acceptance of digital metering technology. This technology provides companies, such as Invensys, the ability to offer highly accurate energy management services for process plants, factories, and other commercial and residential applications.
Analog Devices Energy (ADE) chips enhance energy metering solutions through the benefits of improved quality, reliability, accuracy and stability. The ADE7759, which is the latest member in the ADE family of energy measurement ICs, is a high-accuracy electrical energy measurement data converter designed to replace the energy measurement function of electromechanical meters. Analog Devices’ ADE7759 and other ADE chips are based on the company’s expertise in mixed-signal design. For more information, please visit: http://www.analog.com/energymeter.
