Landis+Gyr extends focus meter capability, combining AMR with extended range metering

LAS VEGAS, April 25, 2005 — Landis+Gyr announced an extension of its solid-state, FOCUS® residential metering platform capabilities with the addition of Form 2K meters for extended range metering. Orders for the new meter configuration are now being accepted.

“By making this new meter form available on the FOCUS meter, we are answering the market’s continued need for extended range metering,” states Lizardo Hernandez, Landis+Gyr’s Product Marketing Manager for FOCUS. “The FOCUS 2K eliminates the need for utilities to add current transformers on site in order to step down voltage for residential metering applications. Furthermore, by adding 2K capability to the FOCUS meter, we have effectively combined extended range metering capabilities with all of our currently available communication options, such as the DCSI EMT, the Hunt TS1 and TS2, and Cellnet Interleave AMR modules.”

FOCUS 2K self-contained meters are designed for Class 480 installations and are capable of metering intermittent loads up to 600A. With the 2K self-contained meters, no Current Transformer (CT) installation is required because the CT is contained in the meter base and current diversion associated with external CT secondaries is eliminated. This simplified meter installation is more accurate and less costly than its transformer rated counterpart.

When combined with third party AMR communication modules, the FOCUS meter delivers benefits not found with other solid-state residential platforms. The FOCUS meter’s unique single-circuit board design, with fewer connectors and fewer parts, increases reliability and contributes to better overall endpoint performance. Endpoint diagnostics are accomplished more quickly and more accurately because the FOCUS metrology and the AMR communication module are separated.

Class 320 FOCUS 2SE meters are also available from Landis+Gyr. These socket-based meters can be installed on Class 320 Amp services. This feature offers the same advantage of the K-base design but is limited to a lower class of service. For product information, visit www.landisgyr.us or contact Landis+Gyr at 765-742-1001.
