RALEIGH, N.C., June 1, 2004 — Elster Electricity, LLC announces that Mississippi Power Company, a subsidiary of Southern Company, has installed Elster’s EnergyAxis System with intelligent two-way communications and controlled mesh network. The EnergyAxis System utilizes a 900Mhz network comprised of Elster Electricity’s new single phase electronic REXâ„- meters and A3 ALPHA® meter collectors. As installed at Mississippi Power, Elster’s system allows for the collection of power consumption and voltage data from residential homes. Other applications may include residential apartments and townhouses.
Mississippi Power, which serves approximately 193,000 customers in southeastern Mississippi, is in the process of deploying 500 system meters at two test locations in Meridian. Both locations cover hilly terrain and have wooded areas with mature trees. In order to evaluate the coverage of Elster’s two-way radio frequency technology, one test location has typical underground power lines with many of the meters installed on residential lots larger than one acre. The other site has typical overhead power lines, higher population density, and more wooded areas with most meters installed on residential lots smaller than one acre.

“Installation was very easy,” said Bryan Seal, supervisor of electric operations, metering services for Mississippi Power. “We initially installed about 60 REX meters scattered throughout the first trial area that stretches out about one mile from end to end with a width of approximately 1/2 mile. When we activated the system every meter registered successfully, which was something I wasn’t expecting in this area. I thought the terrain and trees posed potential obstacles, but we experienced no communications problems.”
Mississippi Power selected the EnergyAxis System to test the system’s two-way communications technology. Additional benefits include improving tamper detection capabilities, reducing the number of meter site visits, maintaining high levels of customer service and performing virtual disconnects and reconnects in highly transient areas such as colleges, universities and military housing. A virtual disconnect allows the utility to remotely monitor power usage while the power is still connected.
