Montana Power, Along with Other Utilities, Focuses of Telecom
In a recent news wire, UTC (the Telecommunications Association) reported that Montana Power intends to focus company growth on expansion of the fiber-optic network of its telecommunications subsidiary, Touch America. Touch America, currently centered in the western United States, hopes to go from a regional to a national telecom services provider by the year 2000. The utility intends to use its expanded fiber network to reach customers for telecommunications as well as energy-related products and services. Touch America provides long distance, private line and Internet services through its 8,000-mile digital fiber-optic network spanning 13 western and Midwestern states.
According to the UTC, many other utilities are closely eyeing the emerging telecommunications industry`s deregulation and are eager to join in the competition. A number of U.S. electric utilities have already announced their intentions to provide services in the local exchange markets.
