Pedernales Electric Cooperative has purchased 6,048 units of American Innovation`s `AIMetering System` to be installed in 500-unit increments over the next 12 months. All units will be installed at new residential customer sites. The existing 101,000 residential customers wil be offered the AMR option through a billing insert. To date, this is the largest inbound telphone technology project in the United States

Both the AIMetering System and another inbound telephone device were tested at Pedernales Electric. The system consists of module hardware, the host software and a choice of communications networks.

The implementation decision was based on several factors, including real-time electric consumption data, power-outage notification and customer service support.

ESRI won a major AM/FM/GIS contract to provide a turnkey AM/FM/GIS system for Santee Cooper`s Electrical Distribution Information System (EDIS) and Transmission Electrical Facilities Information System (TEFIS) project. The “hub” of the new GIS will consist of ESRI`s flagship ARC/INFO software. Santee Cooper will use 15 ARC/INFO licenses with ESRI`s full line of extensions. The scope of the project includes hardware, software and related services to include training, installation, integration, consultation, data conversion and support.

ESRI is working with several third-party vendors to provide an integrated solution. Miner & Miner (Greeley, Colo.) will provide the AM/FM specific applications for EDIS while TEFIS is being developed by ESRI. Collins Software (Houston, Texas) will be responsible for the data conversion, and Hewlett-Packard will provide the multiplatform NT and UNIX-based equipment.

Other information technology initiatives are currently under way within Santee Cooper. These include a work management system and a new financial information system and require a full integrated solution with the AM/FM/GIS to provide various work groups access to corporate information. Initial benefits include providing full system inventories along with electrical connectivity configurations for use in design of customer-related work orders.

PacifiCorp has chosen Gentry Systems` Utility Design System (UDS) software for a pilot program to develop and study more effective tools to facilitate and enhance operations for comprehensive electrical design and work order preparation. UDS, running with AutoCAD, will provide the electric design and drafting, design engineering, modeling, cost estimating and material ordering for all overhead and underground electric construction documents.

UDS will be configured to PacifiCorp`s needs and will use its in-house standards to provide a rule-based system for all construction engineering needs. PacifiCorp, with its Utah and Pacific Power Divisions, is the largest electric utility geographically in the United States–serving seven western states.

SCT Utility Systems, a subsidiary of Systems Computer Technology Corp., announced that Alexandria, La., has gone live with SCT`s BANNER customer information system (CIS). Alexandria is a multiple-service, public utility providing electricity, water, gas, security lights, sewer and refuse services for more than 35,000 customers. BANNER Human Resources and Government Finance Systems were previously installed in Alexandria.

SCT was also awarded a contract from Anoka Electric Cooperative (Anoka, Minn.) for the BANNER CIS. Anoka is one of the largest electric cooperatives in the United States, providing electric service to more than 85,000 customers. In addition, Anoka is using the BANNER CIS to process water and sewer billing for neighboring cities. The implementation of the software was accomplished by a joint team of Anoka and SCT personnel.

Westin Engineering Inc. (San Jose, Calif.) announced two project awards with the city of Austin, Texas. The first project award is for Westin to provide construction services for a lift station telemetry system. The upgrade of the lift stations` electrical and instrumentation systems in this pilot project will establish standard products, procedures and methods by which other lift stations will be upgraded.

The second project is for Westin to provide software configuration services for the programming of two lift stations` RTUs, 35 wet-well monitoring sites and the SCADA system software to be installed at the Walnut Creek Waste-Water Treatment Plant. Westin will develop programming and configuration standards that will be followed in the later upgrade of the remaining lift stations.
