New Products

 Sleeve Plugs

Appleton, a supplier of electrical products, now offers watertight pin-and-sleeve electrical plugs, receptacles, connectors, inlets and mechanical interlock devices designed to conform to IEC 309-1 and 309-2 global standards. These problem-solving IEC 309 devices provide portable electrical connections in commercial and light industrial environments subject to temperature extremes, vibration, impact, dirt, moisture, corrosive elements and wash downs. Appleton IEC 309 pin and sleeve devices are available in 3, 4 and 5 pin models with voltages ranging from 110V to 600V, and are rated at 20, 30, 60 and 100 amps.

Automation Controller

Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories Inc. announced that the SEL-3530 Real-Time Automation Controller (RTAC) is now available for purchase. The new RTAC is a complete substation automation platform that incorporates communications, security and custom logic along with simple configuration software. The RTAC includes the IEEE C37.118 client protocol for receiving synchronized phasor messages. The IEEE C37.118 protocol is included with every RTAC for no additional charge. Each RTAC includes a complete IEC 61131 logic engine, needed user security and logging, advanced data concentration, local and remote I/O, and protocol conversion capabilities between multiple built-in client/server protocols.

Energy Storage

Ice Energy, a provider of smart grid and distributed energy storage solutions for leveling peak energy demand, announced plans to expand its solutions offerings to focus on large scale utility deployment. Ice Energy’s solutions for utilities integrate distributed energy storage technology with closed loop, two-way control and an advanced software infrastructure to permanently reshape the load curve. Ice Energy’s solutions enable utilities to unlock the full potential of distributed load management by addressing peak system cooling loads, the single biggest challenge in their demand portfolio. This makes it possible for utility companies to use cleaner, less expensive off-peak power to produce and store energy for use during peak demand periods—permanently lowering peak demand, reducing carbon emissions and lowering the cost of service. Ice Energy permanently and transparently shifts cooling energy consumption to off-peak hours,. It is suitable for most commercial, industrial and institutional buildings with central air conditioning in all geographies.

Edge Switch

GarrettCom Inc. has introduced the Magnum 6KL Managed Edge Switch, which brings fiber port configurability for managed networking capabilities all the way to the edge of industrial networks, in even the most hostile environments. The 6KL switch is the smallest industrial managed switch available—a compact, environmentally sealed 10-port Ethernet switch with an ambient temperature range of -40 C to 85 C. The Magnum 6KL offers unprecedented levels of configurability for industrial networking applications in harsh environments. Featuring the modular architecture shared by the Magnum 6K family of managed switches, the 6KL base unit includes four 10/100Mb copper ports, plus up to six additional ports which can be combinations of Gigabit, 100Mb, and 10Mb fiber ports and copper ports.

Smart Meter

Defidev, a French solutions integrator specializing in powerline communication, unveiled a new generation of IP-based electricity meters, developed in collaboration with Elster and integrating DS2 PLC technology. Based on internet protocol standards and integrating higher bandwidth technology to enable advanced services, the meters greatly reduce the capital and operational costs of automatic meter infrastructure deployment for utilities, according to the companies. The meters, which are designed to communicate with the Phoenix Gateway based in the street transformer, transmit the meter readings over the low and medium voltage electricity networks. The meters support the device language message specification part of the IEC 62056 series of standards covering data exchange for meter reading, tariff and load control that provides interoperability between the Gateway and all the metering standards.

Grid Software

Itron Inc. announced the latest release of its integrated data management and analysis platform, Itron Enterprise Edition (IEE) v7.0. IEE v7.0 includes many new features to support advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) business processes and help utilities realize the full benefits of their smart grid deployments. The flagship solution in the IEE Suite, IEE Meter Data Management (MDM), includes a host of new features and functionality including an enhanced billing determinant calculation process for high volume interval data-based billing, an expanded set of Web services that support two-way AMI communications, and new AMI operator dashboards. IEE MDM expands its out-of-the-box integration with OpenWay, Itron’s smart metering solution. IEE v7.0 also includes significant enhancements to IEE Mass Market Customer Care and IEE Revenue Protection.
