NRTC and NERTEC announce exclusive AMR partnership

Herndon, VA, June 12, 2002 — The National Rural Telecommunications Cooperative (NRTC), which delivers telecommunications and information technology solutions to rural communities, and NERTEC Inc., a provider of AMR systems, have made an agreement to provide rural electric cooperatives with new options for their AMR needs.

“Our partnership with NERTEC creates an attractive financial model that provides business-to-business, as well as business-to-consumer solutions for our members,” said Mike Pristas, NRTC’s Vice President of Utility Solutions. “Our goal is to offer our members basic, cost effective meter reading services plus the flexibility to implement a variety of value-added features, such as power outage alarms and load profiles.”

The contract increases NRTC’s range of AMR solutions from LINK power quality monitoring, to three-phase commercial and industrial products for electric co-ops plus additional residential solutions. NRTC members can begin placing orders for NERTEC products, effective immediately.

“This agreement is a win-win for NERTEC and NRTC,” said Guy Lemieux, President and CEO of NERTEC. “We handle direct sales to municipal and investor-owned utilities, while NRTC distributes our AMR products to the U.S. electric cooperative market.”

NRTC will be offering a special rebate for the first 10,000 residential AMR meters sold this year. Cooperatives have the choice to install the meters themselves or hire NRTC to contract installations.

NRTC members also have the choice of acquiring and managing their own NERTEC UNIX based SerView host system, or simply subcontracting the monthly meter reading service to NRTC. Members can view and download their meter readings from the NRTC website. NRTC will also offer marketing services program for members who wish to sell these AMR based services to the electric consumer.

NRTC (www.nrtc.org) supports more than 1,000 rural utilities and their communities by delivering telecommunications solutions such as product research and development, technical support, marketing assistance, regional support, and an industry voice. NRTC’s members serve more than 20 million customers in areas of the country that have been un-served or under-served by traditional utilities and other businesses.
