NW Natural names Mark Dodson CEO

PORTLAND, Ore., Oct. 15, 2002 — NW Natural Gas Co.’s, dba NW Natural, Board of Directors announced that Mark S. Dodson has been appointed the company’s chief executive officer (CEO), effective January 1, 2003.

Dodson, 57, will replace Richard G. Reiten, 63, who has served as the company’s CEO since 1997. Reiten will remain Chairman of NW Natural’s Board of Directors. He is also expected to be elected Chairman of the American Gas Association for 2003.

“Dick Reiten’s leadership over the last seven years positioned NW Natural as one of the nation’s top gas distribution companies,” said Wayne Kuni, Governance Committee Chair of NW Natural’s Board of Directors. “In addition to building a focused, financially disciplined company, Dick put together an extremely talented management team. Mark’s appointment is a reflection of that talent and the careful effort the company has put into succession planning over the years.”

Dodson grew up in Oregon and practiced law in the state for nearly 25 years. He was a partner in the law firm of Ater Wynne Hewitt Dodson & Skerrit in Portland, Oregon, from 1980 until 1997. Prior to that, he worked in the General counsel’s office of the U.S. Department of Transportation and then became special counsel to the Federal Aviation Administrator in Washington, D.C.

Dodson came to NW Natural in 1997 and served as Senior Vice President of Public Affairs and General Counsel. In May 2001, he was appointed President and Chief Operating Officer.

“Mark is an extraordinary leader with strong values and great business instincts. He has a tremendous ability to inspire and mobilize an organization,” said Dick Reiten. “I’ve worked with Mark for the last five years, and I know he understands the importance of keeping NW Natural focused in this challenging time in our industry.”

Reiten added, “As Chairman of the Board, I expect to take an active role in guiding NW Natural. Mark and I share a common view of where our company and our industry are headed. I know we’ll continue to be a good team in the years ahead in my role as chairman.”

“NW Natural has a long legacy of respected leaders, individuals like Dick Reiten and Bob Ridgley, whose work strengthened the company and the community,” said Mark Dodson. “I am honored to follow them and to have the opportunity to lead this great 143-year-old Oregon company.”

Dodson is married to Ruth Ann Dodson and they have two children: Carrie is a graduate student at Harvard University; Kevin is a senior at the University of Oregon.
