Schlumberger Industries Inc. reports that it has formed an alliance with Whisper Communications Inc., allowing it to offer utilities flexible, two-way, unlicensed radio frequency, central meter reading systems based on Whisper components and Schlumberger software and system architecture. “The end-to-end AMR architecture coming from the Whisper/Schlumberger partnership is a key enabler for shaping the future in the energy industry,” said Mick Mullagh, Whisper Communications` president and CEO. In a related development, Schlumberger and Illinova Corp. announced a memorandum of understanding for installation of a two-way customer communication system featuring centralized meter reading that will cover 1.1 million meter points over a 15,000-square-mile area. Schlumberger will integrate system components, provided by itself and Whisper, with software. Schlumberger will also manage the deployment, and operate and maintain the system during a 15-year lease period.

ESRI and Florida Power & Light Co. (FP&L) announced a joint research project to evaluate and extend ESRI`s products for utilities. The project will cover installation, testing and evaluation of ESRI`s spatial database engine for storing, retrieving and updating FP&L`s existing land base data. It will also cover testing and development of ESRI`s NetEngine for modeling complex electric distribution facilities and networks, and evaluation of ArcView GIS, Map Objects and ARC/INFO software for managing complex electric distribution facilities and networks.

Dataradio reports that is has been chosen as an IBM Business Partner-Solutions Provider. IBM`s eNetwork Wireless Software will support Dataradio products, and Dataradio will be a licensed reseller of IBM wireless solutions.

American Innovations and Northern Utility Communications, Inc. have signed a two-year agreement to market the AI metering system in Canada.
