Pepco selects the Powerweb Omni-Link® Internet energy platform

MEDIA, Pa., May 15, 2002 — Powerweb Technologies Wednesday announced a contract with Potomac Electric Power Company to purchase Powerweb’s Omni-Link Internet Energy Platform to replace an existing system that operates the company’s Curtailable Load Program (CLP) for large commercial customers.

Omni-Link is a patented Internet portal that will allow Pepco to manage its entire CLP through one user-friendly interface. The new system will enable commercial customers to receive quick notification of curtailment options, monitor energy prices in “real-time”, curtail facility load, control new smart device technology, and calculate curtailment savings, from a single Internet gateway.

The new Pepco interface will be specifically designed to integrate into Pepco’s existing infrastructure in order to process multiple forms of communication to its customers. In the event of a need to curtail load, Pepco could instantly notify customers by e-mail, instant fax and automated computer-generated phone calls. The new load management system also includes several redundant networks to provide 100% reliability.

CLP is a demand reduction program that allows Pepco customers who have voluntarily signed up for the program to reduce their demand for electricity by cutting back on airconditioning or other high-energy use activities. This automated load management for commercial customers is exercised occasionally during the summer cooling season in order to manage the peak load on the electric system.

In return for reducing demand, customers receive credits on their electric bill. In addition, through the Omni-Link interface, the performance of each customer can be monitored and then presented along with credit information for review by the customer over a secure Internet site.

The Omni-Link will also interface with Pepco’s Customer Information System to apply the appropriate credit to the customer’s electric bill. Steve Sunderhauf, Pepco’s program manager said “after an extensive review of proposals submitted by multiple vendors, Powerweb was selected because they offered a system which met our current needs and one which would provide new technological options for the future.”
