Power Measurement Energy meters offer DNP over Ethernet

VICTORIA, B.C., July 9, 2004 — Power Measurement, a leading provider of enterprise energy management systems, has extended the functionality of its ION 7500â„- and ION 7600â„- intelligent energy meters to offer DNP 3.0 compatibility over Ethernet. Used extensively in the electric utility industry, the distributed network protocol (DNP) offers open standards-based interoperability between substation computers, RTUs (remote terminal units), IEDs (intelligent electronic devices), and master stations.

By supporting DNP 3.0 over Ethernet, the ION 7500 and ION 7600 meters can help utility managers lower communication costs by enabling each meter to communicate with up to three different pieces of equipment simultaneously over the facility’s existing Ethernet communications infrastructure. According to Paul Doig, Power Measurement marketing manager, the ION 7500 and ION 7600 products represent the world’s first revenue meters to offer DNP over Ethernet, supporting multiple connections from substation automation systems.

“With three DNP-supported communications ports, each ION meter provides simultaneous access to multiple RTUs or SCADA master stations,” said Doig. “With this capability, T&D and substation personnel have access to the same data at the same time, so they can make timely, informed decisions based on the latest information. And with so many substations using Ethernet communications, it just makes good financial sense to upgrade to DNP-enabled, Ethernet-ready IEDs.”

Ideal for monitoring key distribution points and sensitive loads, the ION 7500 and ION 7600 energy meters feature a large graphical display, high-accuracy measurements, advanced power-quality analysis, energy and demand tracking, and historical trending capabilities, combined with web compatibility and control features.
