Powerspan and Ontario Power Generation team up to advance multi-pollutant control technology

NEW DURHAM, N.H., Sept. 17, 2002 — Powerspan announced recently that Ontario Power Generation (OPG) has joined the ECO Development Partner Program, which supports the development and deployment of Powerspan’s multi-pollutant control technology called ECO or Electro-Catalytic Oxidation.

Powerspan’s integrated pollution control system reduces coal-fired power plant emissions of nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, mercury, and fine particulate matter.

As an ECO Development Partner, OPG gains access to ECO demonstration sites and test results. OPG is kept informed of the product’s commercialization through quarterly updates and meetings. In addition, OPG will receive preliminary designs and cost estimates for ECO systems at two of its power plants.

According to Frank Alix, Powerspan’s Chairman and CEO, the partnership benefits both companies. “We are excited to have OPG, one of Canada’s largest electricity generating companies, in our Development Partner Program. We expect that the information OPG obtains about our cost-effective ECO solution will play a key role in their environmental performance planning.”

According to OPG’s Senior Advisor for Fossil Technology, Blair Seckington, “OPG believes that a multi-pollutant control approach like ECO that can remove high levels of nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, and mercury could represent an attractive option for meeting future environmental targets. Participation in Powerspan’s ECO Development Partner Program should become an important element of our environmental technology R&D program.”

Other members of the partner program include the electricity-generating companies of Cinergy Corp., Allegheny Energy Supply, and AmerenUE.

Ontario Power Generation is an Ontario based company whose principal business is the generation and sale of electricity to customers in Ontario and to interconnected markets. OPG’s goal is to be a premier North American energy company, while operating in a safe, open and environmentally responsible manner. The company’s focus is on producing reliable electricity from its competitive generation assets, power trading, and commercial energy sales activities.

Powerspan Corp. is engaged in the development and commercialization of proprietary energy technology for the electric power industry. Company research and development efforts focus on applications of its technology to reduce the environmental impact of power generation.
