Shawano Municipal Utilities of Wisconsin chooses Elster Electricity’s EnergyAxis System as total system solution

RALEIGH, N.C., May 19, 2005 — Elster Electricity, LLC announces that Shawano Municipal Utilities (SMU), in Shawano, Wisconsin is installing the EnergyAxis System with intelligent two-way communications and controlled mesh network. The EnergyAxis System is an advanced metering automation system for residential, commercial, and industrial applications featuring Elster’s single phase electronic REX® meter and A3 ALPHA® meter collector. SMU selected the EnergyAxis System as its total system solution based on the system’s many features that help utilities increase productivity and improve customer service. System deployment is expected to be completed by June 2005.

Shawano Municipal Utilities is installing approximately 5,000 meters throughout the city in residential, commercial, and industrial applications. After the installation phase is complete, SMU will launch a new billing system that will interface with Elster’s EnergyAxis Metering Automation Server (MAS).

The remote reading capability of the EnergyAxis System will allow SMU to eliminate the need for estimating monthly electricity usage during periods when weather conditions make the meters hard to access. Additionally, the ability to perform scheduled and on-demand meter reads and remote service disconnects/reconnects will eliminate the need for scheduling and dispatching crews to the field. SMU anticipates seeing a significant improvement in business operations and customer satisfaction by eliminating misreads, billing errors, and reducing the number of customer inquiries generated from inaccurate bills.

“With the new REX meters having the capability of providing end-point demand and voltage, we can collect information on a system-wide basis in order to analyze and improve the operation of our distribution system,” stated Andy Onesti, general manager of Shawano Municipal Utilities. “We continually strive to improve our operations and we strongly believe that the completion of this project will be another step towards reaching our goals.”

“The Shawano EnergyAxis project is an excellent example of how the system seamlessly scales to meet the needs of a small utility provider while still offering all the system’s advanced features,” remarked Al Weber, Elster Electricity’s regional sales manager for the central US. “We are excited that Shawano Municipal Utilities has chosen the EnergyAxis System as their total system solution. Once the electricity metering phase of the project is completed, plans will follow for implementing the EnergyAxis System for water metering later in the year.”
