Shell Oil Co. Will Sell Electricity
Shell Oil Co. is getting into the business of selling electricity and natural gas directly to homes and businesses through a new Houston-based company called Shell Energy Services Co. It expects to begin retail sales in selected deregulated markets before the end of the year.
“We would like to be a significant player, recognized nationally, just as we are recognized in the gasoline business,” said Alan Raymond, a Shell marketing executive who was named to head the new company.
Shell has talked to the state of Georgia, which is in the process of deregulating its natural gas industry, about being certified as a marketer there. Shell has a list of states in the Northeast that it is interested in, Raymond said, as well as California and some other states on the West coast, “as they invite us in.”
