ATLANTA, March 11, 2002 — Southern Co. has announced the formation of the Southern Co. Environmental Executive Committee.
This newly formed committee will be responsible for establishing environmental policies, reviewing key environmental strategies and plans and evaluating the company’s performance.
The Environmental Executive Committee will function as a subcommittee of the Southern Co. Management Council, which is responsible for establishing company policies and strategy. The Council reports to Chairman, President and CEO Allen Franklin.
Southern Co. has long invested in the resources necessary to meet the company’s environmental commitment. Hundreds of employees are dedicated to not only making sure the company either meets or exceeds all environmental laws and regulations, but also that the company develops strategies and practices to continuously improve the company’s environmental performance.
“Our definition of performance also extends to community participation and stewardship efforts that teach environmental responsibility and help us solve problems at the grassroots level,” said Franklin. “Ultimately, the responsibility for how well we do in all areas of environmental performance rests in the hands of our company’s leadership.”
Recommendations to the committee from the company’s environmental managers will provide critical input for establishing the policies, strategies and plans.
The Environmental Executive Committee will consist of:

* Dr. Charles Goodman, senior vice president of Southern Co., responsible executive
* Charles McCrary, president and CEO of Alabama Power
* David Ratcliffe, president and CEO of Georgia Power
* Travis Bowden, president and CEO of Gulf Power
* Mike Garrett, president and CEO of Mississippi Power
* Anthony James, president and CEO of Savannah Electric
* Paul Bowers, president of Southern Co. Generation and Energy Marketing
* Ed Holland, executive vice president and general counsel of Southern Co.
