June 29, 2001–U.S. carbon dioxide emissions from burning fossil fuels rose by 2.7 percent in 2000, increasing from 1,517 million metric tons of carbon (MMTC) in 1999 to 1,558 MMTC in 2000, according to preliminary estimates released today by the Energy Information Administration (EIA).
