From London to New York and Sacramento to Santiago, Utility Automation spans the globe to bring you the latest developments and advancements in UA technology. To ensure the editorial quality of the magazine, a select group of individuals has been assembled to participate in Utility Automation`s Global Editorial Board. Each member will bring to the magazine a set of talents and expertise from a variety of technical areas. These talents include disciplines in energy management, distribution automation, mobile computing and GIS covering the electric, gas, water and telecommunications industries. I introduce to you the Utility Automation Global Editorial Board:

Richard Biljetina oversees the Institute of Gas Technology`s (IGT) marketing, commercialization, licensing and gas industry program areas. He also administers IGT`s sustaining membership program which is supported by more than 50 member utilities and represents about one-third of IGT`s research revenues. It addresses the longer-term R&D needs of the gas industry and supports the development of advanced combustion, automation, cooling, distribution, storage and transportation systems for natural gas.

Biljetina has also served as a consultant to state energy agencies and public utilities. Biljetina received a bachelor of science in chemical engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1969 and a masters in business administration from the University of Chicago in 1974.

Following an early career in electric transmission and distribution, John Cottrill, Ph.D., joined the UK Civil Service in 1976. He initially worked in the Department of Energy dealing with technical, economic and environmental issues associated with electricity supply, production and distribution. In 1983, he joined the Department of Trade and Industry with responsibility for communicating UK government policy to businesses in the electrical engineering sector and coordinating industrial input into policy development.

Cottrill is currently the director of engineering and safety at the Electricity Association, the trade association for the UK electric industry. He has been with the Electricity Association since 1990, shortly before privatization of the industry began. He also serves as chairman of EAQA Ltd., an independent, accredited certification body offering expert, third-party certification to the energy and environmental sectors.

Dominic Giangrasso is a department manager of the Telecommunications User Services Group supporting the communications needs of the central operating organizations of Consolidated Edison (ConEd) in New York. During his 20 years at ConEd, Giangrasso has held various positions within the operations and information resources areas. He also managed a $45M project to automate the distribution control center for ConEd. In early 1996, he took his present position where his group supports the communications systems, both wireline and wireless, of the electric operations departments within ConEd. He is an affiliate member of the Personal Digital Assistant Industry Association. Giangrasso has a bachelor of science in electrical engineering from Manhattan College and a masters of science from New York University.

Connie Hsiung has worked in the field of SCADA/EMS and communications for electric utilities since she joined Black & Veatch in 1989. She is currently assigned to the Power System Management (PSM) section at Black & Veatch where she is responsible for planning, design and implementation of information and automation technologies for managing power systems at electric utilities. Hsiung speaks frequently at various U.S. and international conferences, including DA/DSM(TM) DistribuTECH(TM). Her international assignments include projects in Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines. Hsiung received her bachelor of science in electrical engineering from the University of Missouri-Rolla in 1987 and has done graduate-level studies in the areas of optical communications and control systems.

Elizabeth Kunze has more than 10 years experience in market intelligence and business development with a variety of technology and service companies. Her company, Pathfinder Asociados, is headquartered in Santiago, Chile, where she focuses her expertise on decision-making issues and deployment of operations automation tools throughout South America. Her technology expertise includes AM/FM/GIS and SCADA with a market intelligence focus on operations automation for the telecommunications, electric and gas utilities, and pipeline industries. Additionally, she writes about the deployment of operation automation tools for a variety of trade magazines. Elizabeth has a bachelor of science in geology from the University of Georgia and a masters in business administration from the University of Denver concentrating in marketing and economic development.

Mike Smith recently joined Westin Engineering as marketing manager after having spent more than six years with PennWell Publishing Co. In his new position with Westin, he will be responsible for corporate marketing and will participate in new business development activities for the engineering consulting firm. During his tenure with PennWell, Smith worked as a market analyst, account manager, business development manager and general manager for CSR Market Data Services, the predecessor to Utility Automation Market Research. He was also the founder and publisher of Utility Automation magazine and has served on numerous industry committees, including: Conference Chairman, DA/DSM(TM)

Asia `95; founding member, DA/DSM(TM) DistribuTECH(TM) Water Track Program Committee; and member, AM/FM International. Smith holds a bachelor of arts in economics from San Jose State University and served in the U.S. Army Reserve (Captain, Infantry).

Now serving as principal in charge of electrical engineering services at Finkbeiner, Pettis & Strout Inc. (FPS), Rohit Trivedi P.gif>., obtained a career with plant automation and power systems covers more than two decades. His work with plant automation includes the design of one of the first distributed control systems in northwest Ohio in 1979. Since then, he has directed a staff of more than 20 employees in the design and implementation of numerous distributed control projects ranging in size from 500 to more than 10,000 software tag systems. FPS has completed more than 30 SCADA systems under Rohit`s direction, including projects in Akron, Bowling Green, Wood County and Toledo, Ohio. He is currently directing his staff in the design and marketing of a new line of software products for plant maintenance and biosolids application monitoring. In addition to being a member of the Water Environment Federation (WEF), Trivedi is a member of the American Water Works Association (AWWA), the National Society of Professional Engineers, the Instrument Society of America and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. He has presented papers on instrumentation and control systems at the National WEF Conference and at the AWWA Computer Conference. Trivedi joined FPS in 1969 and was named a principal of the firm in 1989.

Utility Automation welcomes the “Super Seven” to our growing editorial team. These additional powers will solidify Utility Automation`s position as the premiere publication for the various technologies used in the utilities industry. And with them, we plan to continue to provide the best coverage on the most pressing issues of our industry. So please continue to do your part by sending us your opinions and suggestions.
