Trust takes years to build, seconds to lose

Public relations firm Edelman has released its 2012 Edelman Trust Barometer Global results. The 12th annual study surveyed more than 30,000 people in 25 countries. It has become the global litmus test to identify who has trust, who lost it and why.
 
This year’s barometer was especially relevant to the energy industry because of the earthquake and subsequent nuclear disaster in Japan. Not seen on the balance sheet was the 46 percent decrease the energy industry lost in consumer trust.
 
Among other revelations, the study shows:
  • CEOs and government officials no longer are the default spokespeople.
  • Technology remains on top in all markets; the finance sector is still at the bottom.
  • Trust in Japanese and South Korean banks fell to levels in the West.
  • The majority of countries distrust their governments.
  • The media is the only institution to see trust increase.
  • Despite lack of trust in government, people still want more regulations.
