Union Electric Reaches 250,000-Meter Mark

Union Electric now has more than 250,000 utility meters on line that provide usage information in the St. Louis metropolitan area. These installations represent the completion of more than one-quarter of CellNet Data Systems Inc.`s 800,000-meter contract with Union Electric scheduled for completion by early 1999. According to the two parties, the installation is one of the largest implementations of a wireless network meter reading system in the United States.

Exceeding the installation goals set by the companies in December, CellNet and Union Electric have completed the on-line deployment of an additional 150,000 utility meters since that time. Meters are defined as “on-line” when they have been installed and are providing data to the network as frequently as every five minutes. Once on line, the information allows Union Electric to enhance residential and commercial customer service by better estimating demand, detecting power outages and providing time-of-use service rates.
