WalkAbout Computers introduces enhanced rugged tablet PC with transflective display

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla., Aug. 1, 2002 — WalkAbout Computers, Inc., a manufacturer of rugged tablet computers serving mobile workers in the utility, public safety/EMS and other vertical markets, recently announced the introduction of their new rugged Hammerhead 3 computer with a 10.5″ transflective display that delivers full readability in all lighting conditions.

Available in both pen-based and touch screen models, the new display technology is ideal for a variety of mobile computing applications where longer battery life and the ability to adapt to various environments and lighting conditions are extremely critical.

By operating in reflective mode in strong light conditions and backlighting mode in darker environments, the new Hammerhead 3 display delivers the rich color saturation and high contrast of a backlit TFT display, while maintaining the ability to view the screen outdoors in bright sunlight.

This innovative design provides greater flexibility for mobile workers, allowing them to operate the computer in their vehicle, outside on the job site or in the office, without compromising readability.

The new Hammerhead also offers an advanced power management application to improve performance and reduce system resource usage, and dual 2100mAh Lithium Ion batteries, which yield a 27 to 35 percent performance improvement over previous models.

“WalkAbout is committed to delivering the gold standard in display technology,” cited Dave Grainger, WalkAbout’s CEO. “The new transflective display, software and battery improvements enable workers to remain in the field for longer periods of time without recharging or switching batteries. In addition, the Hammerhead’s dual hot-swappable batteries can be replaced in 5 seconds without stopping the application, providing seamless operations and improved productivity.”

The enhanced Hammerhead 3 comes standard with a rugged milled aluminum housing, Intel Mobile Pentium III Processor, 128 MB RAM, 10 GB hard drive, Windows 98 O/S and legacy dock compatibility. Additional information can be found on WalkAbout’s web site at http://www.walkabout-comp.com.
