MILWAUKEE, June 16, 2005 — We Energies said Wednesday that it agreed to purchase the development rights for two 80-megawatt wind farm projects in Fond du Lac County from Navitas Energy Inc., a Minneapolis wind development company.
The agreement was signed by both companies Tuesday. Applications will likely be filed this year, and it is expected that the projects will be on-line in 2007, pending regulatory approval.
Terms of the purchase were not disclosed.
The purchase includes the engineering, leases and permits for the two wind farms, located in the towns of Calumet and Marshfield, in northeast Fond du Lac County. The two projects are named Blue Sky Wind Farm and Green Field Wind Farm.
The development rights for a third site named Lake Breeze Wind Farm were also purchased from Navitas. The Lake Breeze Wind Farm is located in the town of Taycheedah.
Navitas signed an agreement with We Energies in 2003 to build the wind farms.
Navitas recently offered to sell the projects to We Energies as a result of “several economic factors,” including changes in the currency exchange rate.
We Energies will take over the development of the projects and oversee the construction and future operation of the wind farms. The Milwaukee utility said it is committed to having 5 percent of its retail sales come from renewable resources.
