Western Resources name change to Westar Energy becomes effective

TOPEKA, Kan., June 19, 2002 — Western Resources Wednesday announced that the change of the corporate name to Westar Energy, Inc. has become effective.

The company will begin trading on the New York Stock Exchange as Westar Energy, Inc. on Monday, June 24, 2002. The ticker symbol will remain WR.

Stock certificates previously issued in the name of Western Resources, Inc. and The Kansas Power and Light Company will continue to represent the same number of shares of Westar Energy, Inc. The company does not plan to issue new stock certificates to existing shareholders in connection with the name change. Stock certificates issued in the future will use the name Westar Energy, Inc.

Westar Energy is a consumer services company with interests in monitored services and energy. Westar Energy provides electric utility services to about 640,000 customers in Kansas. The company has total assets of approximately $6.6 billion, including security company holdings through ownership of Protection One and Protection One Europe, which have more than 1.2 million security customers.

Through its ownership in ONEOK Inc., a Tulsa, Okla.-based natural gas company, Westar Energy has a 44.7 percent interest in one of the largest natural gas distribution companies in the nation, serving more than 1.4 million customers.
