Jefferson City, Mo., April 25, 2003 — ABB, a power and automation technology company, announced that its distribution transformer factory in Jefferson City, Missouri, has received certification to provide Factory Mutual (FM) approved products.
The certification applies to ABB single phase (10-250 kVA) and three phase (45-2500 kVA) pad-mounted distribution transformers.
The FM “Mark of Excellence” indicates that the product conforms to the highest standards. FM-certified transformers have special fusing, less flammable cooling fluid, and a specially rated pressure relief device. FM-certified transformers are typically used in both indoor and outdoor applications where safety is especially important. ABB is one of only two suppliers of FM-certified pad-mounted transformers.
Tom Brennan, Vice President and General Manager of ABB’s Jefferson City facility, says that the FM certification opens up new market opportunities for the plant. “We continually examine our product offerings to make sure they serve the evolving needs of our customers. We offer a unique customer focus on specialty applications that no other competitor can match,” says Brennan.
The FM certification process is a rigorous one, involving documented evidence and on-site observation of prescribed requirements, as well as product testing by FM representatives.
Third-party equipment certification has increased in recent years, in part due to industry restructuring.
Transformer customers-whether utilities, industrial customers or construction firms-may not have the in-house expertise to specify distribution equipment or to inspect the products they purchase for compliance to industry standards. Organizations like FM provide the means for these customers to identify equipment and vendors that will meet their needs.
