Google asks for approval to buy, sell wholesale electricity

January 8, 2010 — Internet powerhouse Google, Inc. filed with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission late last month requesting approval to buy and sell energy on the wholesale market.

The California-based search engine corporation said its large data processing centers require large amounts of power.

Google Energy LLC, a unit of Google, told FERC that the company wants authority to contain and manage the cost of its energy.

Google said requests such as these are not uncommon, as other companies with large power appetites have been given market-based rate authority from FERC.
