Governor proclaims April ‘Texas Electric Choice Month’

AUSTIN, Texas, April 24, 2003 — April 2003 has been declared “Texas Electric Choice Month” by Governor Rick Perry. The declaration is part of a statewide campaign created by the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUC) to educate Texans about electric competition and the choices it brings.

In 2002, more than half a million Texans among all customer groups — residential, commercial and industrial — switched electric providers. In addition, residential customers saved more than $900 million on their electric bills.

More than 25 active Retail Electric Providers offer electric service to Texans in areas of the state open to competition. Depending on where they live, residential customers have between three and 11 providers from which to choose, creating an opportunity for savings. Residential customers who switch to the lowest cost provider can save between $180 and $324 over the year.

Customers can choose an electric provider based on what is important to them — price, customer service, or the opportunity to support environmentally friendly sources of power.

Customers are encouraged to follow three easy steps to shop for a new electric provider. They are:

* Contact: Have the ZIP Code handy and call the toll-free Answer Center at 1-866-PWR-4-TEX (866-797-4839) for a list of electric providers serving their area. Online, simply click on the “Choose Now” section of www.powertochoose.org and enter the ZIP code for a list of providers.

* Compare: Contact area electric providers and ask about each company’s electric rates and services. Ask for each company’s Electricity Facts Label, which provides details on electric rates, contract terms, sources of power generation, and other important information in a standardized, easy-to-read format. The Electricity Facts Label can help customers make an “apples-to-apples” comparison of offers. In addition, a comparison of offers and Electricity Facts Labels from area electric providers is also available at www.powertochoose.org.

* Choose: After comparing offers, customers can choose the electric provider that best meets their particular needs. Switching providers is as easy as one call to the new company or one visit to its Web site. Customers do not need to contact their old electric provider to tell them about the switch. Phone numbers and Web site links of electric providers are listed on www.powertochoose.org. To request information by phone, call 1-866-PWR-4-TEX (866-797-4839).

For a free brochure on Electric Choice in either English or Spanish, call toll-free 1-866-797-4839 or visit the Texas Electric Choice Web site at www.powertochoose.org or www.poderdeescoger.org. Additional publications are available in English and Spanish, and alternative materials will be provided on the Web site for customers with visual impairments. Customers also can call the toll-free TDD number (1-877-864-4725).
