Turn surge protectors and other chargers off

Sacramento Municipal Utility District says the power strips, phone chargers and unused electronics can be a cause of “phantom load” — using up electricity even when not in use. SMUD encourages its customers to turn off power strips when they are not being used. Measures like these can save up to 15 percent of a total energy bill, according to the utility.
