Firing up the charcoal grill or barbecue smoker is an energy efficient way to cook outside instead of using an electric range or oven — which can heat up kitchens and cause more air conditioner use. As Massachusetts utility company NSTAR points out, customers can also use microwaves or countertop appliances in place of the stove or oven.
