4. Tucurui Dam, Brazil (8.37 GW)

Constructed from 1975 to 1984 at a cost of more than $5.5 billion, the Tucurui Dam brought power to 13 million Brazilians. The first major hydroelectric project on the Amazon River, the dam’s construction required the relocation of thousands of people. The story of the dam’s construction was dramatized in the 1985 film, “The Emerald Forest.”
