Irene hit many areas throughout the Caribbean and the East Coast of the U.S., finally making its ninth and final landfall near New York City. The storm affected 15 states in all, plus Washington., D.C. About 7.4 million homes and businesses lost power, roughly half of which were still without power three days later.
