Hurricane Charley (2004) $16 billion

A strong Category 4 hurricane, Charley hit Florida at its maximum strength. The storm was, at the time, the strongest hurricane to hit southwest Florida since Hurricane Donna in 1960. About 1.42 million people were evacuated in advance of the storm’s landfall. Strong wind gusts downed nearly 1,500 power lines and knocked over 28 large transmission towers at a power plant in Mariel, Cuba.
