Hurricane Rita (2005) $12 billion

Rita was the most intense Atlantic hurricane ever recorded and the most intense tropical cyclone ever observed in the Gulf of Mexico. The hurricane occurred just a month after Hurricane Katrina, and its storm surge inundated many low-lying communities along the Gulf Coast. The hurricane interrupted electric service in areas of Louisiana and Texas for several weeks and caused 120 deaths in the U.S.
