EDF International Networks and Capgemini are partnering to develop common offerings for smart meters and smart grids.
The two companies intend to combine their expertise and resources to build common offerings to support the smart metering projects and smart grid initiatives that are emerging around the world.
The EDF Group, through its subsidiary, the EDF Group international subsidiary dedicated to transmission and distribution, has extensive experience in large-scale smart metering solutions, particularly in France.
Capgemini has long been at the forefront of smart metering and led more than 75 projects with roles ranging from consulting, deployment, systems integration to metering infrastructure operations.
“The complementary nature of the expertise of two French industry leaders, their resources and their geographical locations, gives us the opportunity to build a unique offering on the market and to contribute to the energy transition,” explains Marie-Line Bassette, CEO of EDF International Networks of the initiative.
The penetration of smart metering was about 50% in Europe and 65% in North America in 2019, according to data attributed to Berg Insight. This rate is expected to exceed 70% in both regions by 2024. At the same time, projects are multiplying in Asia and for example India is aiming to deploy more than 250 million smart meters in the coming years.
EDF International Networks has installed nearly 100,000 prepayment smart meters with the aim of reaching, as a first step, 5 million meters.
“This new form of cooperation, combining our complementarities and international ambitions, is part of an innovative dynamic in the relationship between our two groups,” notes Sophie Craviari, head of the EDF account within the Capgemini Group.
Alongside smart metering and the data that this provides, the development of smart grids is proceeding apace with the emergence of new digital tools and the drive to digitalize the sector to support the energy transformation.
