US utility Con Edison has installed some 4 million smart gas modules and electricity meters for consumers in New York with Itron.
Some 25,000 methane detectors developed by Itron have also been deployed by the utility, a development which has led to the detection and mitigation of over 300 valid gas events.
The advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) is enabling Con Edison to improve outage detection and restoration, and reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions by ensuring grid operation is at optimum voltage levels.
An IoT network installed as part of the AMI project, enables the utility to remotely read all of its smart electricity meters within 15 minutes, this is equivalent to 375 million reads a day.
Con Edison is leveraging a managed services contract with Itron to optimise management and maintenance of its AMI applications and infrastructure.
