Duke Energy plans to connect microgrid to distribution grid

Duke Energy Carolinas will connect a microgrid built at its Mount Holly Research and Development Lab to its power distribution grid, according to the Charlotte Business Journal.

The microgrid will regulate power quality and voltage for a substation circuit at Mount Holly, according to Duke Energy officials.

The utility revealed its plan to connect the laboratory to the power grid with its North Carolina Utilities Commission filing this week. The filing also mentions a plan to install battery energy storage capacity at the same site — likely to be completed in the first half of 2017.

Duke Energy’s other microgrid projects include one at Mount Sterling in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and the McAlpine Substation in Charlotte, N.C.
