EPRI addresses technology, utility operations at DistribuTECH

Electric Power Research Institute will discuss its research on a range of technologies, systems, and strategies related to the dynamic developments in power delivery, telecommunications, data systems, and grid management at the 2016 DistribuTECH Conference and Exhibition, February 9-11, in Orlando, Florida.

Among the areas EPRI will discuss at its exhibit and in conference sessions are emerging grid technologies and systems related to their interoperability in a smart grid; “big data” and data analytics; managing distributed energy resources; advanced metering infrastructure; cyber security; and the application of augmented reality in utility operations. EPRI also will discuss its telecommunications initiative in support of power providers’ increased reliance on communications networks.

Tuesday, Feb. 9: Learn about the Telecommunications Initiative – EPRI representatives Scott Sternfeld and Christine Hertzog will be on hand to discuss how this initiative is helping utilities plan their transitions to new telecommunications infrastructures that support advanced grid operations and new business models.

Tuesday, Feb. 9, 12:30 p.m. and Wednesday, Feb. 10, 3:30 p.m.: GridEd – EPRI team member Lori Warneke will be on site to discuss GridEd, the EPRI-led workforce education program to teach the fundamentals of the advanced power system to new and seasoned utility employees. Ongoing (During Show Floor Hours): Advanced Connectivity and Integration – Technical executives will be on hand during booth hours to discuss and demonstrate open-source software, as well as industry standards and applications for connecting field devices and consumer appliances. See below:

· Augmented Reality and Field Force Visualization: A number of applications are available now for use by utilities. EPRI’s Norm McCullough will be on hand to discuss how EPRI R&D is helping utilities take advantage of this technology.

· Cyber-Physical Data Integration: How could utilities integrate data from informational and operational systems with the ability to dynamically alter firewall rules and send consolidated logging to a centralized monitoring center? EPRI’s Integrated Security Operations Center (ISOC) concept is being applied to current vendor offerings and is being used by major utilities. EPRI’s Ralph King will be on hand to provide a walk-through.

· Data Mining Initiative: What should utilities do with all that data from smart meters? EPRI’s Doug Dorr will discuss how a new, open source data repository can help utilities gain insights from across the country.

· DERMS: EPRI’s Gerald Gray and Brian Seal will demonstrate how EPRI’s Distributed Energy Resources Management System (DERMS) can help streamline integration efforts.

· Energy Storage Valuation Tool (ESVT): What are the costs and benefits of energy storage? EPRI team members will be available to discuss how the ESVT is helping utilities answer these questions.

· Integrated Grid Initiative and Pilot Projects: What does optimal integration of distributed energy resources look like? EPRI’s Lindsay Rogers will be on hand to discuss how the integrated grid is taking shape throughout the nation.

· OpenADR: EPRI’s Walt Johnson will demonstrate Automated Demand Response software (OpenADR).

· Standards and Interoperability: EPRI’s Pat Brown, Gerald Gray, and Walt Johnson will describe approaches and tools to help utilities store and use their growing volumes and varieties of data.

· Streamlined Hosting Capacity Tool: Where are the best places for solar and how much can a local system handle? EPRI’s Tom Key will be available to discuss EPRI’s wildly successful Streamlined Hosting Capacity Tool.
