CHK files patent for transmission input to GLOMES

DENVER, COLORADO, November 29, 2001 –CHK Wireless Technologies Inc. reported that through a funding grant from Hydro One, Canada’s largest Electricity Utility, CHK has developed new technology (ESCAT) that greatly enhances its existing REMMIT patent, making it self calibrating, stand alone, but most importantly, connecting transmission lines into CHK’s GLOMES remote monitoring system now operating on, but previously limited to distribution networks.

Internationally patented REMMIT stands for REMote Monitoring Instrument Transformer, an accurate method of measuring current. However unlike conventional Current Transformers (CTs), REMMIT sensors are mounted at a safe working distance from the conductors with no contact and no insulation, so the same REMMIT system is used for all conductor sizes, voltages and currents. It is a clean, low maintenance digital measuring system with huge cost savings to Utilities. At 330kV REMMIT is about 30% the cost of conventional post type CTs with negligible installation and maintenance costs, as the circuit can be left alive.

While REMMIT requires all “nearby” conductors to be monitored. ESCAT (Earthed Self Calibrating Ampere Transducer) makes REMMIT “stand-alone” with the potential to provide low cost automation, metering, power quality monitoring and protection anywhere on Transmission & Distribution grids. Accuracy higher than conventional CTs is achieved through an iterative process, as ESCAT progressively locks on to each current carrying conductor and automatically assigns algorithms to calculate the current, ignoring nearby conductors.

CHK is expert in improving a Utility’s reliability & quality of electricity supply, a rapidly growing market area due to competition created by world wide utility deregulation and privatization. CHK holds a number of patents on its proprietary technologies including Tracker, a distribution network fault, current, voltage logging device, UNIsense, used in Tracker and as a single stand alone device to measure electrical current from 0 to 25,000A, plus GLOMES, which monitors all CHK’s sensors.

These technologies are utilized in CHK’s Power Quality sensor products and marketed to utilities worldwide.

GLOMES is particularly important, because it links CHK’s technologies to provide a complete network overview at the control room or over the Internet for any utility via radio, satellites, mobile or landline phones.

GLOMES/Tracker has the potential to introduce SCADA and automation down to the network feeder level, previously affordable only at substations from which feeders (the major network component) emanate.

This is a long desired goal of Utilities.

CHK has also become a GE Smallworld Business Partner to seamlessly integrate GLOMES with GE Smallworld’s control room GIS systems, currently used by many utilities worldwide.
