Communities off the coast of Scotland are powering their homes and businesses with generators after damage to an underwater cable transmitting power from the mainland interrupted electricity service to five Orkney Islands. Just short of 1,000 households are affected by this power outage, according to the BBC.
The affected islands are: Shapinsay, Sanday, Stronsay, Eday and North Ronaldsay. The island of North Ronaldsay has its own backup generator on site, but the remaining islands had to have power generators shipped in from the mainland.
Authorities said power should be restored by late July 26. Crews from Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) are working to address the outage.
The Orkney Islands are home to the European Marine Energy Testing Centre, where devices that generate wave and tidal power are tested.
