Energy-utility sector lagging in cyber readiness, report says

The energy and utility industries are at a greater risk of a major breach in cybersecurity than their counterparts in finance, federal government or retail, according to a new report from security ratings firm BitSight.

The third annual BitSight Insights Industry Benchmark Report, released this morning, warns that the power utilities are vulnerable to potential malware threats. Finance ranked best in the report, followed by federal government, retail, energy/utilities, health care and education.

“As this industry connects previously isolated control systems to the internet it becomes increasingly important that a focus on operational technology (OT) does not overshadow the importance of information technology (IT) related threats such as a malware infection that could shut down the power grid,” one of BitSight’s key findings reads.
