HTS cable goes live in practical application

Southwire Co. installed three 100-foot high-temperature superconducting (HTS) cables to power three manufacturing plants at its headquarters in Carrollton, Ga. Having nearly zero resistance, HTS power cables lose only about a half-percent of power during transmission, compared to 3 to 8 percent lost by traditional power cables.
