IntraCoastal to develop utility automation solutions for the North American market

VANCOUVER, B.C., November 8, 2001 – Vid Wadhwani, Chairman & COO of IntraCoastal System Engineering Corporation is pleased to announce that IntraCoastal will be developing a new generation of devices targeting utilities and consumer Internet access.

Recent completion of IntraCoastal’s proprietary two-way Power Line Communications (PLC) technology is enabling the Company to focus on the North American Energy Sector. IntraCoastal plans to work closely with several prominent North American companies to develop a complete solution.

Currently, National Semiconductor is the first of such companies that will assist IntraCoastal with technical and marketing support.

“National’s Geodeà¢â€ž- microprocessors will be a vital enabler of our Utility Access Device (UAD), one of the key products currently in development,” reports Hafez Panju, VP, Systems & Production.

“The UAD, in conjunction with our PLC Technology, will provide the Utility with not only Automatic Meter Reading capabilities but also Demand Side Management functionality; two critical features they are looking for now. With the support of National, the UAD is being designed in a way that will allow for future growth to enable consumers such advance features as internet connectivity for Home Automation.” “National sees the utility sector as an innovative source for driving broadband Internet access, especially to those parts of the country not typically covered by conventional providers,” states Jeff Waters, Director, Consumer Access Business Unit for National Semiconductor.

“We are pleased that our Geode technology will be one of the key enablers of the UAD, and look forward to working with IntraCoastal to drive its adoption.”

“A collaborative approach has always been our philosophy,” reports Wadhwani. “We are very pleased that companies like National Semiconductor share our vision and are willing to support our business. We believe that these relationships will strengthen our position in North America and with our overseas business well underway, we will truly be a global leader in offering Utility Automation Solutions.”

IntraCoastal System Engineering Corporation owns proprietary Power Line Communication systems based on Spread Spectrum as well as Narrowband BPSK technologies.

These PLC technologies have been under development since 1992 and the first patent was received in 1998. One application of these technologies is in the field of telemetry for Automatic Meter Reading.

The first two commercial installations are located in southern China and in central Vietnam. The company has pilot projects operating around the world. Another application is in the area of Home Networking and for Command & Control applications.
