Leidos helps Consumers Energy improve electric distribution reliability

Leidos Engineering was recently awarded the next phase of a $13 million follow-on contract by Consumers Energy for distribution design services. Leidos will continue to provide distribution engineering line design services throughout Michigan to the state’s largest utility.

“Our extensive experience in the planning, design, engineering and operation of both overhead and underground transmission and distribution power lines provides utilities with cost-effective, lasting solutions,” said Jim Baxter, senior vice president of Leidos Engineering. “Consumers Energy is improving power reliability for its customers, and our experts are working hard to support those efforts.”

Consumers Energy delivers electric and natural gas service to 6.6 million Michigan residents and is making significant investments to upgrade its energy infrastructure. This includes Leidos’ work, along with significant investments in new power generation.

Leidos’ contract includes field inspection and design of distribution lines; engineering new lines; identification and replacement of aged and deteriorated equipment; line relocations; reconductoring, improved sectionalizing, balancing and optimization of secondary circuits and services; and installation of alternative configurations such as aerial spacer cable and tree wire.

To successfully see the project through completion, Leidos Engineering power delivery experts are co-located throughout the state of Michigan in Consumers Energy’s major volume work centers, working directly with the utility’s local engineering departments. Leidos team members also support Emergency Storm Response efforts as needed.
