New map-based service makes GIS weather information accessible over the Internet

MINNEAPOLIS, MN, December 11, 2001 — Meteorlogix today introduced a new Geographic Information Systems (GIS) weather data service that facilitates the sharing of GIS weather data over the Internet.
With MxInsight GIS For Geography Network(SM), subscribers can display georegistered weather maps or stream weather feature data directly from the Internet to their PC, thereby eliminating the internal costs of supporting, storing and maintaining a database of GIS weather information.

MxInsight GIS For Geography Network supplies weather information through the Geography NetworkSM – a Web site where people can go to publish, share and use geographic mapping data and services. ESRI(r), the world’s leading GIS software developer, builds technology to support the Geography Network and maintains the network’s portal, metadata catalog, digital marketplace and search engine. The Geography Network provides a direct link between the user and service providers, offering maps, value-added data, and industry-specific applications and solutions.

Meteorlogix weather data services have been part of the Geography Network since its inception 18 months ago. Now MxVision GIS For Geography Network is available as a subscription service for commercial and operational GIS users. Meteorlogix will also offer free trial subscriptions for evaluation, demonstration and application development purposes. Industries that would benefit from this Internet-based GIS information include public safety, transportation, utilities and environmental management.

“Now with a few mouse clicks to the Geography Network, weather information from Meteorlogix can be streamed from the Internet into a GIS decision support system, allowing a city or business to determine where and how much weather will affect their operations,” said Clive Reece, Ph.D., GIS weather platform manager, Meteorlogix. “For example, a GIS user involved with public safety or transportation could feed the Meteorlogix current NEXRAD rain/sleet/snow intensity map service from the Geography Network into their GIS and determine which of their community or company assets are affected by adverse weather.”
“Meteorlogix is pleased to offer MxInsight GIS For Geography Network through ESRI’s Geography Network,” said Ronald Sznaider, vice president product marketing, Meteorlogix. “As the GIS industry moves closer to the integration of the Internet and the desktop, it becomes increasingly important to make vital weather data available to a wider array of industries, as well as to the casual GIS user. This service marks the beginning of that information sharing process.”

Meteorlogix (www.meteorlogix.com) is a portfolio company of VS&A Communications Partners III, LP, the billion-dollar equity affiliate of Veronis Suhler & Associates.
The company delivers industry-specific weather management capabilities for its customers to manage weather-related business risks, maximize personal safety and minimize financial loss.
